Team Arkifish, September 2023

Noah Ma – Head Arkifish, IAA '25

Noah Ma is an Asian writer. They’re currently a junior at Interlochen Arts Academy, where they major in creative writing. They were an Archival Assistant at the Interlochen Archival Resource Treasury from 2022-23 before they turned to creating the digital aspect of Project Arkifish as an independent study. When not writing, Noah can often be found trying to paint and cutting their favorite shirts into strangely shaped pieces. They like fall, coffee, printer-warm paper and the smell of Tide Pods.

Bella Rotker – Head Arkifish, IAA '25

Bella Rotker studies Creative Writing at Interlochen Arts Academy. She was born in Venezuela and was raised in Miami, Fl. When she’s not writing or fighting the patriarchy, Bella’s hanging out with friends, watching the lakes, and looking for birds. Bella worked as an archival assistant at the Interlochen Archival Resource Treasury for a year before pursuing an independent study of the archives which resulted in the creation of the digital aspect of Project Arkifish. After graduation, Bella hopes to study creative writing, political science, and archival sciences.

Gabe ProctorStudent Greenleaf Curator, IAA '25

Gabriel Proctor studies Jazz Saxophone at Interlochen Arts Academy. He is from Winnetka, Illinois, which is where “Home Alone” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” takes place. He is an avid lover of random fun facts and all different forms of music. Gabe became interested in the archives after attending a dissertation of the Conn Saxophone, in which the presenter used specimens from Interlochen’s own collection to aid him. His main reason for doing this project is to draw attention to the archives that Interlochen has to offer, and help establish a system where they are more readily available to study and learn from. He hopes to study Jazz Saxophone in college.

Ivy HaleVisual Artifish, IAA '25

Having been drawing for as long as he can remember, Ivy Hale studies Visual Arts at Interlochen Arts Academy. Ivy lives in San Francisco, CA with his family and two dogs. Much of his artwork is informed by his identity as a transgender male and his deep interest in archival history. Music history continues to shape Ivy’s body of work through The Greenleaf Project under the multifaceted Project Arkifish. Two years ago, Ivy found a battered trombone in a storage closet in the Visual Arts building. Almost instantaneously, he fell in love with the rich history of the rise and fall of the F.E. Olds company that made it. Now, he and Gabe are working together to revitalize and understand the connection between C.G. Conn Ltd. and the Greenleaf Collection, hopefully making the “Lonely Instrument Club” not quite so lonely.

Eileen GanterPhoto Archivist, Faculty Advisor

Eileen began her Interlochen association at Interlochen Public Radio in 1984, where she served as Operations Manager, editor of The Guide, host of Music from Interlochen, and the announcer known as the "Cloud Lady" because she ended the noon newscast with a local report on the sky.

In 2016, Eileen returned to campus at the Audio Archives, digitizing open-reel audio tapes of Interlochen Arts Camp performances dating back to the 1950s. When that grant ended, she transferred to the Photo Archives, where she has the joy of preserving and sharing generations of Interlochen magic, which time cannot tarnish nor distance diminish. She has since edged into the role of researcher, historian and advocate for community memory, pursuing the gilded path forged by her friend and mentor, Byron Hanson.

Eileen earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Detroit, where she produced its legendary quiz show Ask the Professor, created videos for the university and stewarded the darkroom at the Smith Media Center. For the past couple of decades, she has been a writer, director and narrator. Her fondest production is With These Hands: Lives that Shape the Land, a Telly-winning multi-media documentary which tells the stories of four Northern Michigan farming families and their profound impact on their communities.

Eileen has years of first-hand experience with archival audio recording as well as film processing and printing methods both old and new. She enjoys the privilege of being rather archival herself, and looks forward to time spent reading, communing with nature, learning about interesting things, finding lost things, and making people smile. She is blessed with a husband, a daughter, and a dog, all of whom love Interlochen.
